Words. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
Tom Stoppard (1937 – 2025)

I’ve been rereading my novel A Measured Thread in anticipation of being interviewed by a local radio host tomorrow. It’s fascinating to read something I wrote seven years ago. While the characters were still clear in my mind, I had forgotten many of the details. Oddly enough, I was surprised to see how much of me was in the book — something I hadn’t recognized while I was writing it. Of course, I found myself lapsing into the role of a literary critic. Still, I have to admit I enjoyed the exercise.

For those of you who don’t live in Wisconsin, The Larry Meiller Show is a morning radio program broadcast throughout the state. Larry has been on the air for over 50 years, interviewing thousands of experts on topics ranging from gardening to home-improvement to the environment. He also has a Book Club and interviews an author every other month. You can click on the link below to live stream the interview (tomorrow, Monday 22nd December at 11 AM Central Time on Wisconsin Public Radio) or listen to it later.

While I was rereading A Measured Thread, I tried to anticipate the questions I might be asked by Larry, or indeed, anyone who calls in during the Book Club interview. I wonder will Larry ask about the settler’s log cabin that plays a major role in both A Measured Thread, and the companion novel, Finding Isobel. I’ve lived in that cabin for 41 years, but it was originally built by Larry’s ancestor, Henry Meiller in 1864 when he and his family arrived from Switzerland!

Another question I’m anticipating is where did the title of the book come from? There’s a striking sculpture on the corner of St. Stephen’s Green in Dublin consisting of three women, one young, one middle-aged and one old. These are Norns, a group of deities in Norse mythology very similar to the Greek Fates. The youngest is spinning a thread, the middle-aged woman is measuring the thread and the oldest holds scissors in her hand. I had considered putting a photograph of the sculpture on the cover of the book but instead opted for using it in the title.

Well, it's time to get back to revising my new novel. I have some ideas for a title, but I’ll wait to see what sort of feedback I get from my Beta readers before I commit.
