We are sisters, Valerie and Mary Behan and we share this website because in 2015 we wrote a memoir about our childhood in Ireland, Abbey Girls.

We started writing at an early age. While we were at boarding school in Ireland we had to write a letter home every week. The habit continued after we emigrated, Mary to the United States and Val to Canada. Mary became a professor of neuroscience at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Val a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-food Canada.

Our parents kept all of our letters! Mary found inspiration for her first novel, A Measured Thread, in some of these, and Val is currently working on Letters to Drogheda, a memoir based on over 30 years of writing home.
